The Spirit of Giving

Oxfam giftsI wasn’t going to mention this in my newsletter, until a stranger from Switzerland said my Instagram post about it inspired her to start doing this with her kids for Christmas, so…

During #GivingTuesday, I funded a bee business for a family through Plan Australia’s Gifts of Hope program, which was matched eight times for added impact.

Plan Australia giftThis gift will help provide hives, bees and training for a community – everything families need to set up their own bee businesses. The bees also pollinate crops, which helps local farms to thrive too.

So what is the impact? Sokhat was given school breakfast for an entire year. Here’s a message she wanted Plan to share:

“Every morning, Plan International gives me breakfast before class. It tastes good and I am full afterwards. I have all the energy I need for lessons. I do not have to work in the rice fields and I can work on my favourite subjects instead! This all happened because a kind person gave money to Plan International for me. I don’t know who they are, but I would like to say thank you. They have changed my life forever.”

UNICEF giftsI’ve sponsored a child through Plan since I was 13, and love their work, but lots of great charities have similar gifting programs, where you give a life-changing Christmas gift in the name of your loved one. I always order a few through the Oxfam Unwrapped collection, like a vegetable garden for a family in Zimbabwe, or clean water for a community in Bangladesh, and a couple from UNICEF’s Inspired Gifts range too, which includes things like educational supplies for kids, therapeutic food sachets, a water pump, vaccinations, winter clothes for a baby, and much more…
